Stand Up Drink Up!
The Comedy Pub Crawl
Now a festival
institution, the comedy pub crawl is not for the faint hearted.
Picture the scene,
around 100 hardy sober souls start off their evening in the calm, chilled
surrounds of Maggie May's, where their guest host introduces them to a
comedian, they laugh some, they drink some, they laugh some more.
Then repeat five
times at various hostelries around the
Merchant
City
with a different comedian in each venue
and the audience reaching varying levels of hilarity as the comedy
crawlers laugh themselves stupid.
Now in previous years
it has been as much fun to watch the audiences on the crawl as it has the
comedians. It’s a little like leading a squadron into battle – you
know they’re not all going to be there at the end. Are they still
standing? Are they all here? Does anyone care?
And then there’s
the reaction of the poor patrons at the bars the Stand up! Drink up! tour
visits. They were having a quiet pint and a blether. Now they have 100
crawlers to deal with and some shouty people with microphones.
And to top off the
night, just in case anyone’s peckish the comedy pub crawlers can devour
some fresh nibbles at various parts along the tour before enjoying an
evening of more laughing and some dancing – if they can still stand.
We know the Scottish
Executive probably wouldn’t approve of such behaviour – in fact,
Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon is probably legislating against "this
sort of thing" now. So take the opportunity to do it while you can
– crawl with a horde of strangers and be entertained by some of the
finest comics in the land.
