LINDA Fabiani, Minister for Europe , External Affairs and Culture last night crowned 2007’s Scottish Comedian Of The Year at Glasgow ’s Old Fruitmarket.

Ms Fabiani presented Sean Grant with the coveted Big Banana Boots trophy after he beat nine other comics in front of a celebrity studded audience at the Scottish comedy industry’s biggest bash of the year. The grand final was hosted by BBC’s Children In Need presenter Des Clarke.

Linda Fabiani said: “The Scottish Comedian Of The Year final was a great event and showcased the wealth of comedy talent that exists in Scotland .  I was delighted to present the trophy and I extend my congratulations to Sean Grant who was a worthy winner.

“ Scotland has long been known for its humour and wit - and it was great to see this celebrated last night. I’m sure both the competition and this year’s winner will go on to great success in the future.”

As Scottish comedian Of The Year Govanite Sean Grant Collected £600 prize money, will have a solo show produced and promoted at the next Magner’s Glasgow International Comedy Festival and secured a 12 month touring contract with comedy producers Ha Ha Comedy and featured in the Scottish Comedian Of The Year showcase tours.

Runner up place went to Greenock lass Jay Lafferty and Aberdonian Gus Tawse secured 3rd place.

Sean's Performance in his Heat

Sean Grant was selected as the funniest performer of the night by a panel of expert industry judges including best selling author and top Scots comedienne Janey Godley.

Janey said: “ Considering he was up against professional acts with eight or nine years experience it’s fantastic that  a newcomer such as Sean  who has only been performing comedy for four months had such confidence and superb material.”

Other judges at the final were Steve Bennett (Chortle), Margaret-Ann Docherty (BBC Radio Scotland) , Bev Lyons (Daily Record) and Freelance Comedy Critic Jay Richardson.

Last night’s final was staged and organised by Ha Ha Comedy, the largest producers of touring comedy shows in Scotland . Heats were held all over the country from Helensburgh to Aberdeen with more than 60 Scots comics from the Scottish circuit taking part before being whittled down to the eventual 10 finalists.

The ten finalists were Rowan Campbell, Sean Grant, Scott Forbes, Jay Lafferty, Scott Agnew, Gus Tawse, Teddy, The Wee Man, Niall Browne and Bratchy.

Please note: Most comedians are lazy incompetent sods, who can't read a train timetable, or would pay 30 pieces of silver to appear on a pilot for a radio panel show. Thus all line ups are subject to change.
Please check with the venue 24hrs prior to the show for confirmation of line ups.
