Helensburgh Heat 1 Review

The 2008 Scottish Comedian of the Year competition steamed into action last night in Helensburgh. Just like the Olympics the locals put on a special display to celebrate the start of the competition. Across the Clyde Jupiter was seen twinkling above Greenock, whilst The Waverley tooted her whistle for us as she docked at Helensburgh pier to unload audience members from Dunoon.

The Waverley is a graceful old steamer from a bygone age who spends her time taking passengers on laid back unadventurous, oldy world meanders around the west coast. Her passengers do not get thrills, spills or bellyaches, but they leave with fond memories of their trip. Just the same way that our first act Nelly Bean made tonight's audience feel.

Nelly reminds me of a kooky Dororthy Paul. I've seen Nelly perform a lot in the past few months. When audiences buy into her weird world they love her, when they don't, they don't. Tonight was one of the nights they don't and unfortunately she only has one or two gears so can't change pace or direction to suit.

From our oldest act tonight we went straight to our youngest act, Ian Johnstone, who slinked onto the stage telling us about the new addition to his family whilst patriotically wearing a Scotland football jersey  from the early 1980's. I think I'm correct in saying that Ian's top is older than he is. Ian has a nice, shy, self deprecating persona on stage. He is wonderfully dead pan and unlike James DeGale he can deliver a good punchline. The trouble is that like his football top, many of the jokes he tells are older than he is. He has some very good original material, but it gets lost amongst what seems to be a very good back catalogue of covers.

The third act on stage was the first to take control of proceedings. The difference in experience and quality was very instantly noticable. Whereas Ian was reserved and relied on his top to highlight his Scottishness, Keir McAllister was filled with a passion which would make Mel Gibson proud  and went straight for the patriotic anti English, pro flooding of England jugular. After that he told one of the funniest "inappropriate things which happen during sex" stories ever. McAllister  is one of the most hard working comics in the country and it shows. As I said in last years review he has well worked material which does not use an excess of words to get a joke across. He easily paints a picture in your mind and keeps the momentum going layering punchline over punchline. Last year Keir was unlucky not to get to the final. This year he has claimed the first Grand Final spot by winning tonight's heat. Keir Mcallister Scottish Comedian of the year finalist 2008 live in action at Ha HA Comedy, Clyde bar , Helensburgh

It was a close run thing however with a finalist from 2 years ago on next and also having a stormer. That finalist was Obie. After the interval he brought his unique brand of silly humour to the stage. Obie is a total natural on stage. He was born to be laughed at. His approach is scatter gun, his ideas bizarre and his joviality infectious. Obie's twisted fairly tale could only come from someone who has taken too much acid. Or in his case someone who just enjoys being silly. Obie narrowly missed out on the top spot tonight, however his second place gives him a spot in the semi final. He has improved immensely in the past 2 years. He is consistent and has learned to drop duff material. It will take a lot to beat him in the semi final.

After Obie and Keir many new acts would struggle to keep the pace. Not Jimi McQuigan, well at least not at first. Jimi is cranially challenged, something Jimi allowed the crowd to appreciate. Dick and Dom would have been proud of his routine which was filled with bogey's and all other manners of toilet humour. But like a portaloo on the Sunday at T in the Park his set was too full of toilet humour for the audience to completely enjoy it. Towards the end and struggling to remember his material Jimi's nerves betrayed him, his continual erming and umming detracted from the flow of his routine. He needs to sharpen up his performance skills to capitalise on his material.

Having never performed comedy before, without his knowledge John Gavin's wife last month entered him into a competition for newcomers at the Edinburgh Fringe. He did so well he got through to the final. It is still very early days in John's comedy career but you would not know it. His writing is very mature. He knows how to construct a joke and how to emphasise a strory. John's angle is that he is a former skin head with tatoos, who is now a cardigan wearing father of three girls. His tales of female heavy homelife are easy to associate with. Infact they are a joy to listen to. If he keeps at it I would expect John to be in next year's SCOTY final.

Last up was Rob Kane. Eighteen months ago when he was starting out, the Helensburgh audience voted him through to the final of a UK wide new act competition. It was obvious they still enjoyed his energetic ramblings and tales of being a former ned. Rob has some killer lines. His adlibbing is superb but his set lacks structure, making it difficult to build laughs. The momentum disappears from his routine by his continual use of "so anyway" in response to lines which don't work as well as he wished. Not to worry too much though, because many more of his lines worked than didn't. Rob's style lends itself nicely to the Gong Show format. he has a good chance of getting to the final via that route.

It was difficult separating Keir from Obie, but they were clear ahead of Rob, John and the others. A good start to this years competition. Next stop Ivory Glasgow on Sunday 31 August

Youtubes will follow shortly.
